3-on-3 is a "skills" based game that is best described as "organized pond hockey" where players can develop their skills in a spring/summer league with an emphasis on fun over winning. The benefits of 3-on-3 hockey stretches far beyond the less competitive atmosphere it creates as it is seen as one of the best ways for a player to develop their overall game:
- With a smaller numbers of players present on the ice there is an increased space available for the player to work within. The increased space creates the need to move with the puck more, allowing players to developed better footwork and puck control
- 3-on-3 blurs the distinction between offensive and defensive players creating a need for all players on the ice to create both an offensive presence in the opposing team’s zone as well as a defensive presence in their own
- 3-on-3 style of play promotes two-way player development resulting in offensive players developing defensive skills while defensive players develop more puck confidence and offensive tactics
- Goalies are always in the play resulting in more shots on net in addition to more movement which helps with conditioning, awareness and positioning
