Chris grew up in Oakville since the age of twelve and played for the Oakville Rangers AAA program from U13 to U18 helping lead his teams as a captain to many successful seasons and major tournament wins including the SilverStick. Chris has three boys all playing in the Oakville Rangers system and has helped coach their teams in varying capacities for nearly 10 years. He has worked the majority of those years with the 2012 age group.
My coaching philosophy is aligned with Hockey Canada and with the vision and the goals of the Oakville Rangers organization. That includes a player-centric approach to development with success driven based on three (3) main elements:
- Enjoyment of players coming to the rink everyday
- Improvement of players’ skills
- Developing players to play at the next level
Improvement of skills includes individual skills, team skills and of course hockey IQ. My coaching focuses in practice on building fundamental skills for all players, connecting those skills to game time situations, and ensuring sufficient repetition to move towards mastery of the skill. Of particular focus for the start of the season will be body contact, building those skills and awareness to ensure players are using the techniques effectively but also ensuring the safety of themselves and others.
My coaching values are encompassed by three things: Attitude, Effort and Ability. The first two are critical to me as they define the culture on the team which is most important to ensure the enjoyment of all players and coaching staff. Ability will vary and can be coached, but without the first two, it becomes challenging.
One of my primary responsibilities as the Head Coach, is to be a role model for the players. This is not a responsibility I take lightly. This is critical to build a mutual respect between the players and coaching staff. Fundamentally, I believe creating a positive environment for players to flourish is key and being grounded by the fact that there are many life lessons that the players will learn that will carry with them farther in life than their hockey career.
The U14AA Blue program will be structured to provide a combination of on-ice and off-ice training sessions. Throughout the year we will have selected power skating, skills and professional coaches working with our players and coaches. The goal of the program is to ensure every player progresses in development and love coming to the rink!
