My coaching background includes this past season coaching U18AA Blue for the Oakville Rangers. Prior to this I was a head coach for 3 seasons with Oakville Hornets GHA (U11AA, U9BB, Novice A levels), 2 seasons as Rangers Assistant Coach at U10 and U11 AA Red. I’ve been an enthusiastic fan of the game since I was young. I enjoy being on the ice and bench with players, helping them develop and improve, giving their best effort, address adversity and achieve team success.
For next season I look to continue the players’ development following the Hockey Canada program for this age group while absorbing and imparting as much as I can from the excellent Rangers coaching group and our assistant coaches. For players in their final minor hockey season, I hope to deliver a competitive fun program that keeps them playing well past minor hockey. For those in their second to last year, I aim to provide development and opportunities for them to continue playing in their final year make the team/level to which they aspire.
Philosophy
I want the players to develop, compete, be accountable, support and grow their confidence, develop friendships and have fun so that they finish their minor hockey careers loving the game for life. We will be a hard-working team that is relentless on pucks and determined not to lose puck battles. We will work on individual skills development and systems to build on the systems play that players have learned in the past few seasons, including power plays, penalty kills (all players will develop on all special teams), zone exit and entries.
Player Selection & Roster
I am looking for players that are committed, competitive and want to have successful final years to their minor hockey careers. Players that can play most skater positions are preferred. Practices will be high paced and players are expected to develop, be coachable, and be great team mates.
I am looking for up to 20 players – 2 goalies and up to 18 skaters. This will help us manage injuries, suspensions and other priorities that may arise (the primary one being academic commitments). If we roster 15 skaters, we will look to sign several Alternate Players (skater and goalie) to practice with us and play games when/if we are short.
Time Commitment
Players are expected to manage their time and prioritize academics and Rangers hockey during the season and attend all events (subject to injury, illness, etc). I expect to have 2 practices a week until mid November and then drop down to about one per week. We can expect 1 home and 1 away game per week and up to 3 pre-season exhibition games. Players need to ensure their academic commitments do not suffer because of hockey.
I am looking to have practices Sunday and Tuesday or Wednesday night in the 8-11pm window. Also hoping for home games on Thursdays. Schedules are fluid this time of year, and this schedule I am intending is still tentative. If we get these practice times (meaning later evening times), players are encouraged and supported in pursuing high school sports teams and part time jobs, but this should have limited effect on their Rangers commitments and their academics.
Season Timeline
We will come together after Labour Day (so, spring and summer are off - players will be encouraged to continue their own development and work on their overall fitness). Players are expected to respect the in-season direction from TCMHL and the OMHA on availability. Christmas will be off, and March Break will be off (subject to playoffs), but playoff games can occur up to and including the Friday before the break as well as on the second weekend of the break.
Tournaments and Travel
I expect to enter 3 tournaments as follows:
- September: Pre-season tournament, ideally outside the GTA (i.e. hotel tourney)
- November 7-9: Veterans Day on the Beach, Fort Lauderdale, FL
- January 15-18: Oakville Rangers Winter Classic – we will be playing AND volunteering during this tournament that runs around the 3rd weekend in January.
- Post season: TBD
