Welcome to the Oakville Rangers Hockey Club U18 BB Blue team site, and thank you for showing interest in the U18 BB Blue programme for 2025/26 by coming here to learn more.
The coaching staff will comprise of parental and potentially non-parental coaches.
For myself, I have been coaching with the Oakville Rangers Hockey Club for over 10 years and have rotated through every bench staff role from Trainer to Assistant Coach to Head Coach. This will be my 7th team as Head Coach. During this time, my teams have been OMHA Champions twice and OMHA Finalist once, and Tri-County Champions five times.
Thank you for showing interest in the Oakville Rangers Hockey Club U18 BB Blue team programme, and hope to see you at tryouts!
Overview
The U18 age group is a double cohort of 16- and 17-year-old players. Traditionally, there is a drop-off of Elite Representative players because studies in the Grade 11 and 12 years take precedence, which it should. Many of these players move to House League due to the reduced time commitment; but at the same time, most of these players also miss the level of compete when in House League.
The Oakville Rangers Hockey Club U18 BB Blue programme is designed to cater for elite players who cannot afford the time commitment, and / or potential injuries and concussions of full body contact / hitting hockey (BB is full contact but no hitting), but want to play at a competitive level of hockey.
The typical Rep Hockey schedule includes 2 x games (home and away), 2 x practices and 1 x dryland training per week. The U18 BB Blue programme will eliminate dryland training and will only have 1 x practice a week with the occasional additional practice as necessary; of course, frequency of games cannot be changed. Through the season, it is anticipated that the team will be together on average 3¼ to 3½ times a week (not including tournaments and social events).
A reduced time commitment programme does not mean a less competitive season; the goal is still to win both Tri-County and OMHA.
The Team
To create a competitive team with a reduced schedule, I am looking for 17 highly experienced, highly skilled, highly self-motivated, and highly fit players who can execute plays well as a team.
Coaching Philosophy
The coaching emphasis for the season will be team systems and team play. Moreover, the objective is to create a 'thinking' player.
Coaches will impart a set of skills and knowledge to each and every player so they understand the 'why' while executing basic team systems. Then players will be encouraged to apply these skills and knowledge to be creative, and to generate their own plays, therefore keeping the opponent guessing all the time.
This in conjunction with the players' experience, skill, self-motivation, and fitness will make a winning combination.
