About the Program

Program Overview
The coaching staff will be looking for players which implement these four pillars that the program is built on:

  • Respect: we give respect to other teams, players, and referees
  • Attention to Detail: every player will be attentive at practice and during games so that we can execute the structure properly to compete at this level
  • Compete Level: we will compete in every practice and game which will reward us in the end
  • Have Fun: hockey is meant to be fun! As a coach, one of the biggest benefits is seeing a team incorporate a system and have fun while doing it

On-Ice Development

  • Introducing new skills: (ex. Surfing, Scanning, Tracking, Indirect Movements, Stick in Lanes, Climb and Downhill) This will help teach the terminology that they would see at the higher levels outside of minor hockey. Our systematic/skills approach is based off NCAA/USHL hockey where the team works as a unit to push the pace from our defense through neutral zone transitions and high-quality offensive zone entries.
  • Systematic Play: Teaching our players how to play within a system that doesn’t rely solely on the talent of the player but the team itself. Outside of minor hockey (OHL, OJHL etc.) – skill is a portion of the game but also being a player that can play within the guidelines of the next coach’s system can make you more desirable at junior camps.
  • Execution: From the coach to player, we want to introduce a system that teaches skill, creates intensity, adds pressure, and creates layers so that we are sound offensively/defensively when it comes to playoffs.

Off-Ice Development

  • Individual Growth: Introduce a workout plan that the player can do at home (not on gamedays). Hold the player accountable by having them track the workouts. This helps create self-discipline and keeps us in shape throughout the season.
  • Open Dialogue: From coaching staff to players, we want to be able to create an atmosphere that everyone is comfortable speaking in-front of the team. Emphasizing that we don’t look down on any teammate is important and helps create a winning atmosphere.

Player Advisement: Shoot For Success (https://shootforsuccess.ca/)
Mitch Atkins is the president of “Shoot for Success” – an advisement group that helps advance players to higher levels and educate them on the NCAA process. At the start of the season, Mitch will be presenting to all players/parents on his pathway from AA to NCAA.

Alternate Player Process
U16 AA Blue will be part of the alternate player process in Oakville this year with the U16 AAA, U18 AA Blue and U18 AA Red programs.
